Whether you’ve landed your dream job across the country or are just looking for a change of scenery, moving to a new city can be both exciting and overwhelming. Learning the locale, making new friends and fitting into the fabric of your city can take quite a bit of time — and a keen sense of adventure. So how do you go from newbie to native?
Taking these steps will help make your new city feel like home faster.
Get walking. Not only is walking great for your well-being, it’s also the simplest way to explore your new city. Start by walking around your neighborhood and acquainting yourself to its quirks and perhaps even discovering gems that might be hiding under the radar. Once you’re familiar with your own neighborhood, tackle a new neighborhood each week. Soon you’ll know your new city like the back of your hand!
Try new places. Instead of hitting up the same coffee shop each morning, expand your horizons. Make it your mission to find the best cup of coffee in your neighborhood by trying one at each café. Check off a new tourist attraction in your city each weekend. Challenge yourself to eat a different restaurant every time you dine out. That way, you’ll keep your entertainment options interesting and experience everything your new city has to offer.
Say ‘yes’ more. Instead of holing up in your house, get out and seek opportunities outside of your comfort zone. Got invited to a work happy hour? Use it to get to know your new coworkers. Is your neighborhood throwing a block party? RSVP ‘yes!’ Once you start meeting people and forming relationships with your neighbors, becoming a part of the community will get easier.
Join groups. Moving to a new city where you don’t know a single soul can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. With the help of social media, apps and clubs, meeting like-minded people in your area has never been easier — it just takes a little digging. Pro tip: be sure to leverage groups like alumni networks, volunteer organizations and workout classes. There’s nothing like getting involved and making friends at the same time!
Be your own best friend. Making friends in a new city takes time. While you work on building your social circle, it’s important to learn to enjoy your own company. Take yourself to dinner, movies and concerts — after all, just because you don’t know anyone doesn’t mean you should stop enjoying yourself!
Just remember, a new home means new opportunities to live out your dream. So be sure to get out there and make your new city your own.
