In a perfect world, we’d have more than enough time each day to check off every item on our to-do lists, and then some. But between work, family, social obligations and taking care of ourselves, extra time can be hard to come by – and that’s a major obstacle when it comes to pursuing our dreams.
So, how can you find time to fit your passions into an already busy life? That’s the question I asked one of our very own dream experts.
“Dreaming is a universal thing that gives us inspiration and purpose, but it can often be hard to dedicate the time and work towards making progress on your dream,” says Natalie Hurley, Senior Dream Curator at American Family's Dreambank (Opens in a new tab).
But just because something is difficult, doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Natalie suggests creating a “25th hour” each day to dedicate to your dream. Sound impossible? She can explain.
“While we can’t actually create an extra hour in the day, it’s all about carving out intentional time for dream pursuit. I think the most important thing is to set aside the time and stick to it, even when your to-do list feels overwhelming.”
The fact is pursuing a dream is never easy. But nothing worth doing ever is, right? It’s all about your mindset at the start of your journey.
“I truly believe that going after your dreams means creating a more meaningful life,” says Natalie. “Dreaming makes us happier and healthier, and if that isn’t worth setting aside time for, I’m not sure what is.”
Sound like something you’re up for? Then here’s how you can start working a “25th hour” into your day:
“Start small. Even if you only have 20 minutes to dedicate towards your dream pursuit, you are still making progress. Watch one less Netflix episode, wake up 20 minutes earlier, or cut something out of your life that isn’t bringing you joy,” explains Natalie. “Or you can always pursue a dream with a loved one, family member or friend! That way you’re not only pursuing a dream, but you’re spending quality time together as well.”
Of course, it’s not always easy to shift our priorities, especially with our families watching over our shoulder or an unfinished project staring us in the face. To that, Natalie suggests, “find a different ‘third space’ away from work or home to do your dreaming.” Whether this is a coffee shop or even a room in your home designated just for your passions, it’s great to separate dreaming from our other responsibilities.
No matter how you choose to do it, working in time to pursue your dreams each day will help you achieve your purpose and lead a more fulfilled life.
“If you’re looking for an excuse not to pursue a dream, you’ll probably find one. Time is limited and we live in an incredibly busy culture. But I say ignore the excuses!” Encourages Natalie. “If you are willing to take a leap of faith and dedicate the time and work, pursuing dreams can make your life richer, more meaningful and create an incredible impact on yourself and those around you.” And who wouldn’t want that?
Now go live out your 25th hour. Your dreams are waiting!
